Vinyl Flooring

We guide you from start to finish

Most people shopping for vinyl plank flooring in Madison, WI want one thing. They want a floor that can handle water. Maybe the basement took on water last spring. Maybe the kitchen floor gave out by the dishwasher. Here’s what vinyl can do and what it can’t.

Why People Choose Vinyl

It handles real life. Spills, wet boots, dog bowls, kids. The planks themselves are waterproof. A spill can sit on top without soaking in.

It looks the part. Today’s planks have a printed wood look with texture pressed in. From across the room most people can’t tell.

It’s easy to live with. Sweep it and damp mop it. No sanding, no refinishing, no wax.

One honest note on “waterproof.” The planks are waterproof. The floor as a whole is not flood-proof. Water can still get through the seams and around the edges. From there it reaches the subfloor underneath. After a big leak the planks may be fine while the subfloor still needs to dry out. Here’s what waterproof really means.

LVP, Sheet Vinyl, or Rigid Core? The Room Decides.

Vinyl isn’t one product. There are three kinds we install most. The right one depends on the room and what’s under it.

  • Sheet vinyl comes off one wide roll. Few seams means fewer places for water to get through. It’s a smart pick for laundry rooms, small baths, and rentals. Sheet vinyl and LVP, side by side.
  • Glue-down LVP is a thinner, flexible plank. It’s glued right to the subfloor. It stays put and sounds quiet underfoot. The floor under it has to be very flat and smooth.
  • Rigid core (SPC or WPC) is a thicker plank that clicks together and floats. SPC has a dense stone and plastic core. It’s the tougher one against dents. WPC has a foamed core that feels a bit softer and warmer. Both hide small dips in the subfloor better than thin vinyl. It’s the one we suggest most for basements and open main floors. How a rigid plank is built.

Then there’s the wear layer. That’s the clear top coat that takes the scratches. A thicker wear layer holds up better to dogs and busy hallways. We’ll show you the difference in person. Got kids and pets? See flooring for kids and pets.

What We Carry

We carry vinyl from Shaw, Mohawk, Mannington, and a few others we trust.

  • Wood-look planks in oak, hickory, and walnut styles. Tones run from pale to deep brown.
  • Stone and tile looks for baths, entries, and laundry rooms.
  • Sheet vinyl in wood, stone, and simple patterns.
  • Planks with a pad attached. Many rigid core floors come this way. The pad softens each step and cuts down on noise.

Planks come in a range of widths and lengths. Wide, long planks make a room feel bigger.

Why Harmony

We’ve been doing floors in Madison since 2009. The thing customers thank us for most isn’t the floor. It’s that one person stays with them the whole way.

The person who comes out to measure is the same person who orders your floor. That person lines up the installers and checks the finished work. They pick up the phone if something’s not right. You never get bounced to another department. We don’t have one.

If water damage brought you here, we’ll talk to your insurance adjuster too. Start with what to do about water-damaged floors.

Financing options are available.

We Handle the Rest

Tear-out, haul-away, subfloor prep, install, cleanup. Your contact schedules all of it and checks the work when it’s done. The installers are people we’ve worked with for years. When it’s finished, you still have the same phone number and the same person on the other end.

Vinyl, Room by Room

  • Basement. This is where vinyl shines. We test the slab for moisture first. Then rigid core floats over the concrete on the right underlayment. Came here from our hardwood page? This is the floor we meant.
  • Kitchen. Planks shrug off spills and dropped food. After water damage we check the subfloor before anything goes down. A mat at the sink still helps.
  • Bathrooms. Sheet vinyl or rigid core. Fewer seams near the tub and toilet is better. Edges near the tub and toilet get sealed.
  • Homes with pets. Scratch resistant, not scratch proof. Pick a thicker wear layer and a textured finish. More on floors for pets.
  • Rentals. Tough and quick to put in. A damaged plank can often be swapped out without redoing the room. Our rental flooring guide.
  • Whole main floor. One plank from the front door through the kitchen. Fewer transitions to trip on. It reads as one clean floor.

Built for Houses Around Here

Picture rigid core vinyl in a finished basement in January. The slab gets a moisture test before anyone opens a box. Then the floor floats over it with room to move.

That’s the boring part of a vinyl job. It’s also the part that decides whether the floor still looks like this in ten years.
