Carpet Flooring

We guide you from start to finish

Carpet is still the floor most people want under bare feet on a January morning. The real questions are which carpet and who’s going to handle it. Here’s how we answer both.

Why People Still Choose Carpet

It’s warm underfoot. It’s quiet too. Footsteps upstairs don’t carry through the whole house.

It’s softer if someone takes a tumble. That matters on stairs and in kids’ rooms. More on flooring for kids and pets.

It turns a basement into part of the house. Not a concrete box you walk through to get to the laundry.

What about allergies? Carpet traps dust, pet dander and pollen in its fibers. It holds them until you vacuum. So a good vacuum with a HEPA filter matters as much as the carpet you pick. If someone in your house has serious allergies, talk to us first. A hard floor may fit that room better.

Nylon, Polyester or Triexta? Then the Pad.

The fiber decides how the carpet holds up. The pad decides how it feels and how long it lasts. We talk about both before we talk about color.

  • Nylon is the toughest of the three. It springs back after foot traffic and furniture. It’s our usual pick for stairs, hallways and family rooms.
  • Polyester feels soft and resists a lot of everyday spills. It can flatten sooner in busy paths. It’s a good fit for guest rooms and quieter bedrooms.
  • Triexta sits in between. It’s soft and handles stains well. Families with kids and pets often like it.
  • The pad matters as much as the carpet. Too soft and the carpet wears out faster. Too thin and it feels hard. We match the pad to the carpet and the room. For basements and pet homes we often suggest a pad with a moisture barrier.

Here’s more on fiber and cushion for bedrooms.

What We Carry

We carry carpet from Shaw and Mohawk. Plus a few other mills we trust.

  • Plush is smooth and very soft. It also shows footprints and vacuum lines.
  • Textured cut pile is the everyday favorite. The twist in the yarn hides footprints. It works almost anywhere.
  • Frieze has long twisted yarns with a casual look. It’s good at hiding dirt.
  • Berber and loop is tight and durable. Skip it if your cat likes to pull at loops.
  • Patterned carpet adds some design. It helps hide wear on stairs and in hallways.

Come feel them all at the showroom on South Stoughton Road. Or tell us what you’re thinking. We’ll bring samples to your house.

Why Harmony

We’ve been doing floors in Madison since 2009. The thing customers thank us for most isn’t the carpet. It’s that one person stays with them the whole way.

The person who measures your rooms is the same person who orders your carpet. They line up the installers and check the seams when it’s done. They pick up the phone if something’s not right. You never get bounced to another department. We don’t have one.

That’s how carpet installation in Madison, WI should feel.

Financing options are available.

How a Carpet Project Works With Us

1

Call, Text or Email Us

Tell us which rooms you’re thinking about. We’ll figure out together whether you should come see samples or we should come to you.

2

Free In-Home Visit

We measure every room and look at the stairs. In a basement we check the slab for moisture first. Then we go through samples with you at your kitchen table. You get one written price. No pressure. No surprises added later.

3

We Handle the Rest

Furniture, tear-out, haul-away, new pad, install, cleanup. Your contact schedules all of it and checks the seams when it’s done. The installers are people we’ve worked with for years. When it’s finished, you still have the same phone number and the same person on the other end.

Carpet, Room by Room

  • Bedrooms. The classic spot for carpet. Warm on bare feet and quiet at night. Polyester or triexta works well here.
  • Basement. Carpet over a slab works if the slab stays dry. We test it first. A pad with a moisture barrier helps. If the basement has flooded before, we may suggest luxury vinyl plank instead.
  • Stairs. Stairs get the hardest wear in the house. Nylon holds up best. The pad should be firm, not plush. More on stairs.
  • Living and family rooms. Textured cut pile hides traffic paths. A mid-tone color forgives tracked-in winter grit.
  • Hallways and upstairs. One carpet through the bedrooms and hall looks clean. Halls wear first. Pick the fiber for the hall, not the bedroom.
  • Kitchens and baths. Not carpet. Water and food work their way into the pad. We’ll show you vinyl or tile instead.

Built for Houses Around Here

Picture a finished basement in January. Snow in the window well. Warm carpet underfoot. The slab gets a moisture test before anything goes down.

That’s the boring part of a carpet job. It’s also the part that decides whether the room still feels fresh years from now.

Carpet Questions Madison Homeowners Ask

Straight answers. See all our FAQs, or call and ask.

Is carpet a good choice for a Wisconsin home?

Yes, in the right rooms. Carpet is warm underfoot through our long winters. It keeps a two-story house quieter. It’s our usual pick for bedrooms, family rooms and dry finished basements. It’s not the right floor for kitchens, baths or entryways that see snow and salt.

Nylon, polyester or triexta: which carpet fiber should I pick?

Nylon is the most resilient. It’s the best pick for stairs, halls and busy family rooms. Polyester feels soft and resists many spills. It can flatten sooner in heavy traffic. Triexta lands in between. It’s soft and handles stains well. We’ll help you match the fiber to each room. Read more: Best Carpet for Bedrooms

Can you put carpet in a basement?

Yes, if the slab is dry. We test the concrete for moisture before we quote the job. We’ll usually suggest a pad with a moisture barrier. If your basement has flooded or gets damp every spring, we’ll tell you straight. A waterproof plank may be the smarter choice down there. See our basement flooring guide.

Is carpet bad for allergies?

It depends on the person and the upkeep. Carpet traps dust, pet dander and pollen in its fibers. It holds them until you vacuum them out. That makes regular vacuuming with a HEPA filter important. Some people with allergies do fine with carpet. Others do better with a hard floor. If someone has asthma or severe allergies, ask their doctor first.

Is carpet a good idea with pets?

It can be. Pick a fiber that cleans up well, like nylon or triexta. A pad with a moisture barrier keeps accidents from soaking into the pad. Skip loop carpet if your cat likes to scratch. Claws can snag the loops. Our guide on pet hair and carpet has more tips.

Why does my carpet shock me in winter?

Dry air. Madison winters pull the humidity in your house way down. Walking across carpet then builds up static. A humidifier helps the most. Around 30 to 40 percent indoor humidity is a good winter target. Some carpets also have static control built into the fiber. Ask us which ones.

How long does carpet installation take?

Most homes are done in a day. A single room can take just a few hours. Bigger jobs with stairs can run into a second day. In cold weather the carpet needs to warm up indoors before it’s stretched. We plan for that. Pulling up the old carpet and pad, hauling it away and moving furniture are all part of the quote.
