Laminate Flooring

We guide you from start to finish

Most people looking at laminate ask us the same thing first. Should I just get vinyl plank instead? It’s a fair question. Here’s how we help you answer it.

Why People Choose Laminate

Laminate has come a long way. Today’s planks have a printed wood look with real texture pressed in. Most guests won’t guess it isn’t wood.

It’s tough on top. The wear layer stands up to dog nails, toys and sliding chairs. It resists scratches better than most hardwood.

It’s a practical choice. You get a wood look across a whole main floor. That can leave room in the plan for the rest of your project.

And it’s easy to live with. Sweep it, vacuum it, damp mop once in a while. No sanding and no refinishing.

Laminate or Vinyl Plank? It Comes Down to Water.

This is the question almost everyone asks. The two look alike on the showroom floor. They’re built very differently.

  • Laminate has a core made from wood fibers. It feels firm and solid underfoot. It usually holds up better to scratches. That core doesn’t like standing water, though. If water sits in the seams, the edges can swell.
  • Luxury vinyl plank is plastic all the way through. The planks are waterproof. Water can still get under them and into the subfloor. It’s the safer pick for basements, laundry rooms, and full bathrooms.

So the room decides. Laminate is a great fit for living rooms, bedrooms, and upstairs spaces. Where water is a real risk, we’ll steer you to vinyl plank and tell you why. Here’s a longer comparison.

What We Carry

We carry laminate from Mohawk, Shaw, and Mannington. Those are the names you’ve heard of.

  • AC rating tells you how tough the top layer is. AC3 is made for everyday family life at home. AC4 is a step up. It’s built for busy homes, big dogs, and light commercial spaces.
  • Water-resistant laminate handles everyday spills better than older laminate did. Some newer lines are sold as waterproof on the surface for a set number of hours. That covers a spilled glass or a wet boot. It doesn’t cover a leak or a flood. We’ll tell you what the product you pick can really handle.
  • Looks run from light natural oak to soft gray to deep hickory and walnut tones. Wide, long planks are popular right now.
  • Texture matters more than you’d think. On many lines the grain you feel lines up with the grain you see. That’s what makes it look real up close.

Come see it at the showroom on South Stoughton Road. Or tell us what you’re thinking and we’ll bring samples to your house.

Why Harmony

We’ve been doing floors in Madison since 2009. The thing customers thank us for most isn’t the floor. It’s that one person stays with them the whole way.

The person who comes out to measure is the same person who orders your floor. That person lines up the installers and checks the finished work. They pick up the phone if something’s not right. You never get bounced to another department. We don’t have one.

Financing options are available.

Laminate, Room by Room

  • Living and family rooms. The sweet spot for laminate. Lots of foot traffic, not much water.
  • Bedrooms and home offices. Firm and quiet with the right pad underneath. Use a chair mat under a rolling desk chair.
  • Kitchen. It can work with a water-resistant product. Wipe spills fast and keep a mat at the sink. If your kitchen has had water damage, we’ll talk about vinyl plank first.
  • Hallways and entries. Go with AC4 for the busiest paths. Put a good mat at the door for winter boots and salt.
  • Basement. Only if it’s dry all year. If the slab has ever been wet, we’ll steer you to vinyl plank. More on basements.
  • Full bathrooms and laundry rooms. Not laminate. There’s too much standing water. Vinyl plank or tile is the better call.

Built for Houses Around Here

Picture gray oak-look laminate in a family room in January. Snow outside and dry heat inside. The seams stay tight.

That’s because the planks sit in the house first and the subfloor gets checked for flat. That’s the boring part of a laminate job. It’s also the part that decides whether the floor still looks like this in ten years.

Laminate Questions Madison Homeowners Ask

Straight answers. See all our FAQs, or call and ask.

Is laminate or vinyl plank better for my house?

It depends on the room. Laminate feels firmer and usually holds up better to scratches. Vinyl plank is waterproof. That makes it the pick for basements, laundry rooms, and full bathrooms. Plenty of homes use both. Read our guide: Laminate vs Vinyl Flooring: Which Is Better for You?

Is laminate waterproof?

Most laminate is water-resistant, not waterproof. It handles everyday spills if you wipe them up. Some newer lines are sold as waterproof on the surface for a set number of hours. No laminate is flood-proof. If water gets into the seams or under the floor, the core can swell. We’ll tell you what the product you like can really handle.

What does the AC rating on laminate mean?

It’s a wear rating for the top layer. Higher numbers are tougher. AC3 is made for everyday family life at home. AC4 handles heavier traffic, like a busy entry or a house with big dogs. It’s also used in light commercial spaces. We’ll help you pick the right one for each room.

Can I put laminate in my kitchen?

Yes, with a water-resistant product and a little care. Wipe spills when they happen and keep a mat by the sink and dishwasher. If you’re replacing a floor after a leak, we check the subfloor first. We’ll talk to your insurance adjuster too. If water is a real worry, we’ll show you vinyl plank side by side.

Can laminate go in a basement?

Only a dry one. Laminate needs a slab that stays dry all year with a moisture barrier under it. If your basement has ever had water, we’ll point you to vinyl plank instead. Read our guide: Best Laminate for Basements in Wisconsin

Is laminate a good floor with dogs and kids?

Yes. It’s one of the more scratch-resistant floors we sell. An AC4 product with a textured finish hides small marks well. Wipe up pet accidents and water bowl spills fast. See Pet-Friendly Flooring for Madison Homes

How long does laminate installation take?

Most single rooms take about a day. A whole main floor takes a few days. Before that, the planks sit in your house for a bit to get used to the temperature and humidity. Tear-out, haul-away, and moving furniture are part of the quote. You’ll get the schedule in writing before we start.

Where do you install laminate?

Madison and pretty much anywhere within 45 minutes of the Capitol.
