Hardwood Flooring

We guide you from start to finish

If you’re thinking about hardwood, you probably have two worries. Will it hold up in a Wisconsin house? And who’s going to handle all of this? Here’s how we answer both.

Why People Keep Choosing Hardwood

It’s the floor most of us grew up wanting. Warm underfoot. No two boards look the same.

It also holds up. A solid hardwood floor can go 50 years or more. With simple care, it keeps its good looks for decades.

Buyers notice it too. Hardwood is high on a lot of home shoppers’ wish lists. Selling soon? See flooring before you sell your house.

And it’s easy to live with. Sweep it, vacuum it, damp mop once in a while. There’s no carpet to trap dust, pollen, or dog hair.

Solid or Engineered? Depends on the Room.

Wood moves with moisture. Our summers are humid and our winters are bone dry. Put the wrong floor in the wrong room and it cups in August and gaps in January.

So before we talk about color, we ask about your rooms, your basement, and how your house handles humidity.

  • Solid hardwood is one piece of wood all the way through. It lasts for decades with simple care. It’s our first pick for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms on the main floor.
  • Engineered hardwood is a real wood top layer glued to a plywood core. It stays flatter when the humidity swings. That makes it the safer choice for kitchens, rooms over a basement, and lake homes. Most engineered floors can be refinished once or twice. Here’s a longer comparison.

What We Carry

We stock the brands you’ve heard of. Shaw, Mohawk, Mannington, and a few others we trust.

  • Oak is the classic. Strong grain, takes stain well, never looks dated. We carry both red and white oak.
  • Maple is smooth and light. Good for a clean, modern look.
  • Hickory is the toughest of the bunch. Bold grain that hides scratches. Popular with families and dog owners.
  • Walnut runs deep brown. Warm and a little dressy.
  • Birch and cherry are softer woods with a lot of natural color variation.

Most of what we install is prefinished. You can walk on it the day it goes in. If you want a seamless, sanded-in-place look, we do site-finished floors too. Widths run from classic 2¼-inch strip up to 7-inch wide plank. Stains go from natural to gray to dark espresso, in matte, satin, or gloss.

Come see it at the showroom on South Stoughton Road. Or tell us what you’re thinking and we’ll bring samples to your house.

Why Harmony

We’ve been doing floors in Madison since 2009. The thing customers thank us for most isn’t the wood. It’s that one person stays with them the whole way.

The person who comes out to measure is the same person who orders your floor. That person lines up the installers and checks the finished work. They pick up the phone if something’s not right. You never get bounced to another department. We don’t have one.

Financing options are available.

Tell us what’s going on with the floor. From there we’ll figure out together whether you should come see samples or we should come to you.

We Handle the Rest

Tear-out, haul-away, delivery, install, cleanup. Your contact schedules all of it and checks the work when it’s done. The installers are people we’ve worked with for years. When it’s finished, you still have the same phone number and the same person on the other end.

Hardwood, Room by Room

  • Kitchen. Engineered or well-sealed solid. Mats at the sink. Wipe spills when they happen.
  • Living and dining room. The sweet spot for solid hardwood. Steady humidity, lots of eyes on it.
  • Bedrooms. Solid or engineered both work. Softer species like birch are fine here.
  • Stairs. We match the treads and risers to the floor. More on stairs.
  • Basement. Not solid hardwood. Engineered can work if the slab is dry. Often we’ll suggest luxury vinyl plank instead and tell you why.
  • Whole main floor. One species, one stain, room to room. Usually the best-looking result and the best resale.

Built for Houses Around Here

Picture hickory in a living room in January. Bold grain and no gaps. That comes from letting the wood sit in the house before install. The humidity gets checked first too.

That’s the boring part of a hardwood job. It’s also the part that decides whether the floor still looks like this in ten years.

Hardwood Questions Madison Homeowners Ask

Straight answers. See all our FAQs, or call and ask.

Is hardwood a good choice for a Wisconsin home?

Yes, if you match the floor to the room. Solid hardwood does great in main-floor living spaces where the humidity stays fairly steady. For kitchens and rooms over a basement, we usually steer people toward engineered. It moves a lot less through our dry winters and humid summers.

Solid or engineered hardwood: which should I pick?

Solid is one piece of wood you can sand and refinish over and over. Engineered has a real wood top over a plywood core. It stays flatter when moisture changes. You can usually refinish it once or twice. The room decides this more than you do. We’ll tell you which one fits after we see the space.

Can hardwood go in my kitchen?

Yes. Plenty of Madison kitchens have it. We’d point you to engineered hardwood or a well-sealed solid floor. Wipe up spills when they happen and keep a mat by the sink and dishwasher. If the kitchen has had water damage before, we check the subfloor first.

Why are my hardwood floors cupping or gapping?

Almost always moisture. Boards that cup in summer are taking on humidity, usually from a damp basement or crawlspace. Gaps in winter mean the house is too dry. Fixing the moisture problem matters more than replacing the floor. We can usually tell you which one you’ve got over the phone. Read our guide: Why Are My Hardwood Floors Cupping This Summer?

Should I refinish or replace my old hardwood?

Refinishing can extend the life of solid hardwood in good shape. Replacement makes sense when boards are damaged, thin, or cupped, or when you want a different look. We look at it in person and give you a straight answer. See Refinish or Replace?

How long does a hardwood installation take?

Most single rooms take one to three days. Before that, the wood needs to sit in your house for several days so it gets used to your humidity. A whole main floor takes longer. You’ll get the schedule in writing before we start.

Do you handle tear-out and furniture?

Yes. Pulling up the old floor, hauling it away, and moving furniture are all part of the quote. You don’t have to line up any of it yourself.

Where do you install hardwood?

Madison and pretty much anywhere within 45 minutes of the Capitol. Middleton, Fitchburg, Verona, Sun Prairie, Waunakee, DeForest, Stoughton, Oregon, McFarland, Cottage Grove, Windsor, and the towns in between. See every town we serve. The showroom is at 2125 S.
