New Floors Before the Holidays in Madison: What’s Realistic
October 21, 2026

New floors before the holidays are still within reach for a Madison home in late October, as long as the floor can be ordered quickly and the project stays to a room or two. The maples are turning, family is coming for Thanksgiving, and the hallway carpet looks worse every time you picture them walking in.
Harmony Flooring designs, measures and coordinates floor projects across Madison and Dane County, and we would rather tell you what’s realistic at the first visit than promise a date your floor can’t keep.
The Short Version: New floors before the holidays are realistic when you pick a floor that can be ordered and delivered quickly, keep the project to one or two rooms, and get the free in-home visit on the calendar early. Floating vinyl plank, laminate and carpet usually go in fastest. Tile and site-finished hardwood take longest. If the date won’t hold, plan a January install.

Can You Still Get New Floors Before the Holidays in Madison
New floors before the holidays are realistic in Madison when three things line up: a floor that can reach your house quickly, a project sized to the time you have, and no surprises under the old floor. Install day is usually not what pushes a date. The steps in front of it are.
Ask how long flooring installation takes and most answers describe install day. For a holiday date, your clock starts at the measure. Between the visit and the first plank sit ordering, delivery, any time the material needs to rest in your house, and whatever the tear-out uncovers. At the visit we’ll tell you what timing is realistic for your rooms, and the install schedule comes to you in writing before any work begins.
The overlooked lever is flexibility on the exact product, which does more for a holiday deadline than anything else. Two planks that look nearly identical on a sample board can sit on very different delivery paths: one readily available to order, the other a special order with a longer lead time. If the date matters more than one specific color, say so, and ask which floors in the look you like can be ordered and delivered quickly.
Our Madison flooring installation process walks through each step.
What Decides Whether New Flooring Can Go In Before Thanksgiving
Whether new flooring before Thanksgiving is possible comes down to eight factors, and the free in-home visit answers most of them in a single appointment.
Factor |
Why it moves the date |
What to ask at the visit |
|
How soon the visit happens |
Nothing gets measured, priced or ordered until someone sees the rooms |
What is the first visit you can offer? |
|
Product availability |
Readily available floors can move quickly; a special order carries a longer lead time |
Which floors in this look can be ordered and delivered quickly? |
|
Number of rooms |
Every added room adds material, measuring and install time |
If we cut this to two rooms, does the timing change? |
|
Tear-out |
Old carpet, pad, tack strip or a glued floor all come out first |
What is coming up, and is anything glued down? |
|
Subfloor surprises |
Soft spots, dips, a damp slab or an older layer underneath change the plan |
What did you find under the old floor? |
|
Acclimation |
Wood and some planks rest in your house before install so they match your indoor air |
Does this floor need to acclimate first? |
|
Tile set time |
Mortar and grout set in stages, so tile work can’t be compressed |
How will the tile work be staged? |
|
Furniture and access |
Installers move the heavy pieces, but crowded rooms and blocked paths slow everything |
What do we need to clear before install day? |
The rule the table points to: your choices at the visit, mostly product and scope, move the date more than install day does.
Older Madison houses sometimes hide a second layer of flooring under the one you see, and a basement slab is moisture tested before the order is placed.
Acclimation (the rest period when new flooring sits in the rooms where it will be installed, so its moisture matches your house) depends on the product and the meter readings, not a fixed count of days. It only works with your heat running at normal settings. Our acclimation guide explains why that wait protects the floor.
Fastest Flooring to Install Before the Holidays, and the Floors That Take Longest
The fastest flooring to install before the holidays is usually a floating click floor, either rigid core vinyl plank or laminate, or new carpet, while tile and site-finished hardwood take longest because they go in and set in stages.
- Floating click vinyl plank (LVP). Rigid core planks (vinyl with a stiff, dense core) lock together and float over the subfloor instead of being glued or nailed. Some rigid core products need little or no acclimation, though the maker’s instructions decide.
- Laminate. It floats too but wants a flat, dry subfloor and some time in the house first. Most laminate resists spills but is not waterproof, so it belongs in dry rooms.
- Carpet. Often the quickest swap for a bedroom or family room. In cold weather it has to warm up indoors before it’s stretched, and stairs add work.
- Prefinished hardwood. The finish goes on at the factory, so nothing has to dry in your house, but solid and engineered boards still acclimate until the readings settle. It is the middle path for real wood on a deadline.
- Tile. It needs a stiff, flat floor, and the mortar and grout have to set before the room is back in use.
- Site-finished hardwood. After acclimation, raw boards are laid, then sanded and coated in your house with drying time between coats. When your date is tight, it is the floor most worth saving for January.

Which Rooms to Replace First Before the Holidays
If you can only do one or two rooms before the holidays, put new floors where guests walk in and where everyone gathers, meaning the entry and the main living area, then the guest room or the stairs.
The entry. It is the first floor anyone sees, and from November into April it takes wet boots and road salt. Waterproof rigid core vinyl plank is the usual holiday answer here, ideally in a mid-tone wood look with some grain variation, which hides grit and the white haze salt leaves better than a very dark or very light plank. Porcelain tile is an excellent entry floor too, but its staged set time makes it a harder fit for a tight date.

The main living and dining area. This is where the table goes and where people spend the day. In an open floor plan it shows the most floor at once, so it gives the biggest visual change for the work involved.
The guest room. New carpet in a guest bedroom is often one of the simpler projects, and it’s what visitors feel first on a cold Wisconsin morning.
The stairs. Worn stair carpet shows in every photo taken in the front hall. New carpet on the treads and risers lifts the whole entry, but stairs add work, so ask how they affect the schedule before adding them.

How to Plan New Flooring Around a Holiday Date
Working backward from the holiday is the clearest way to see whether your rooms can be finished in time, and you can do it tonight with a calendar.
- Pick the day the floors need to be done, then move it earlier to leave a cushion before guests arrive.
- Choose the one or two rooms that matter most for that day.
- Book the free in-home visit and mention your date when you call. Ask about evenings or weekends if weekdays are full.
- Ask which floors can be ordered and delivered quickly, and pick a backup in case your first choice is a special order.
- Ask what the measure found under the old floor and whether subfloor work is needed.
- Get the install schedule in writing and check it against your date.
- Plan when furniture goes back, especially over tile or site-finished wood that is still curing.

What to Do If New Floors Won’t Be Ready Before Christmas
If new floors won’t be ready before Christmas, protect the floor you have through the holidays and still book the visit, so the install lands in January, when the house is quieter.
A washable runner over the worst stretch of hallway, a mat inside each door and fresh felt pads under the dining chairs can carry a tired floor through one more season. Meanwhile the visit, the measure and the product decision can all happen in November or December. After the holidays, install calendars tend to loosen up.
January also suits the slower floors. If your heart is set on tile in the entry or site-finished oak in the living room, a calm January schedule usually beats squeezing staged work in before a crowd arrives. If this year’s date slips, our fall flooring guide explains why starting after Labor Day makes next year’s holiday floors easier.
Three things to do this week, whichever way your date falls:
- Book the free in-home visit, even if the install will wait for January.
- Walk the house and name the one or two rooms you would do first.
- Put a mat inside every exterior door before salt season starts in November.
Holiday Flooring Timing in Middleton and Sun Prairie Homes
Around Madison, holiday flooring timing runs into two Wisconsin facts: the furnace runs October into April, and salt season runs November into April. Dry furnace air is why wood gets its moisture check before install. Cold matters on delivery day too: carpet brought in from the cold warms up indoors before it’s stretched, and boxed vinyl plank waits inside until it reaches the temperature its instructions call for.
The housing stock shapes the answer as much as the weather. In Middleton, plenty of established 1960s to 1980s ranches and two-stories have their original oak hiding under wall-to-wall carpet. Finding it can change the plan, and we can look at it and tell you what it needs before anything gets ordered. Middleton condos add association rules on sound-rated underlayment and work hours, so bring those rules to the first visit. Our guide to flooring in Middleton, WI covers local service.
In Sun Prairie, much of the city was built in the last 25 years with builder-grade carpet and vinyl, and in many of those homes the kitchen and hallway now show their age well before the other rooms do. Standard room sizes tend to make a main-floor swap simple to measure and quote, which helps when a date is close. Our guide to flooring in Sun Prairie, WI covers local service.

New Floors Before the Holidays: Madison FAQs
Which floors can realistically go in before Thanksgiving in a Madison home?
Floating click vinyl plank, laminate and carpet are the most likely, as long as the product can be ordered and delivered quickly and the subfloor is sound. Tile and site-finished hardwood set in stages, so they are harder to fit into a short window.
Can flooring companies near me in Madison install just one or two rooms before Christmas?
Yes, and a small project is often the most realistic way to get new floors before Christmas. One or two rooms means less material to order, less tear-out and fewer places for a subfloor surprise. Harmony Flooring plans single-room projects across Madison and Dane County, from an entry to a guest bedroom.
What if the floor I want for my Madison home is a special order?
Then decide which matters more, that exact floor or the holiday date. You can choose a readily available floor in a similar look and keep the date, or keep your first choice and plan its install for after the holidays. Ask to see both options side by side at the in-home visit.
Is it risky to have new floors finished right before hosting family?
It isn’t risky if you leave a cushion between the last install day and the first guest. The real risk is a schedule with no slack: if the tear-out uncovers subfloor work, there is nowhere to absorb it. The cushion also covers furniture going back, any set time your floor needs, and the walkthrough with your contact.
Can I put new floors in the main rooms now and finish the bedrooms after the holidays?
Yes. Splitting a project is a practical way to get the rooms guests see done first, but decide the whole plan at the first visit. Carpet, tile and many other floors are made in production runs, and a later run can differ slightly in shade, so if the same floor will continue into the second phase, ask whether to order it all at once.
